RIDA Projects
Phase 1

Today in the 21st century, the interior design profession in Hong Kong has become extremely competitive in the Asia-Pacific region, and local designers are increasingly striving for international recognition. In common with architectural practice, interior design is not merely concerned with aesthetic and commercial values, but also needs to be concerned with issues of public health, safety and well being. As scales of projects and liabilities of interior designers swell, there is a global trend towards ensuring higher professional standards on the part of interior design practitioners through the setting up of proper registration systems. This research aims to examine the issues need to be addressed in this reformation process, and propose a strategic planning for its successful execution in Hong Kong. The project includes literature review on the required body of knowledge of interior design, followed by case studies on the mechanism in establishing licensing systems and devising professional examination in other advanced jurisdictions in US, selected European and Asian countries. Focus group meetings and in-depth interviews were also conducted to collect views from industry professionals and stakeholders.
